  • checked No article specifies who was eligible to be surveyed.G1 Globo · establishes that the outlet published it · Since it is impossible to interview all voters in the country, polling institutes establish criteria to select a group of people to represent the population: the sample . The Quaest survey, released this Wednesday, for example, commissioned by Genial Investimentos, interviewed 2,004 people aged 16 or older between June 5th and 8th . The registration number with the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) is BR-07661/2026. Statistical calculations help explain why most people have never been interviewed in an election poll. The chance of a person being selected to participate in a poll that will conduct 1,200 interviews in the city of São Paulo, for example, where there are more than 9 million voters, is one in 7,768 . The probability is very low: 0.013%. But how can a group of about a thousand people express the voting intentions of an entire city? This sampling is defined based on data available from other bodies, such as the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and the Superior Electoral Court . The sample needs to reproduce the characteristics of the population that will be represented – the same characteristics in relation to sex, age, education, and income . And you can't volunteer to be interviewed. The choice of who will respond has to be random , to guarantee the representativeness of the sample. In this Wednesday's Quaest poll, the margin of error is 2 percentage points, plus or minus. These statistical calculations also define the survey's confidence level, which is 95%. In other words, it means that if the survey is repeated 100 times, in 95 of them the result will be within the margin of error. · 2026-09-08
