Poland halted asylum application registration at its Belarus border in March 2025 as a temporary emergency measure and is now urging the European Union to adopt similar policies during episodes of what it calls instrumentalized mass migration. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on September 16 that the EU executive branch would propose a new emergency response framework for cases of engineered and weaponized migration.
